Working Student – Compliance Automation & AI (m/f/d)

ABOUT US

Pliant is a modular B2B payments platform that combines commercial card issuing, payment accounts, FX, and spend management in one system — adapting to existing setups rather than requiring customers to replace them.

Businesses across industries such as travel, e-commerce, and insurance use Pliant to manage complex payment workflows with cards, backed by credit lines Pliant underwrites itself.

Fintechs and software platforms embed Pliant's payment infrastructure into their own products, from API-based Cards-as-a-Service to fully white-label solutions. Banks use Pliant's Card & Spend OS, the customer-facing interface, on their own infrastructure to run card programs.

Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Berlin, Pliant serves 5,000+ businesses and 40+ partners across Europe and the United States. A principal member of Visa and Mastercard, Pliant issues commercial cards in 13 currencies across 32 countries — under its own European e-money license and with licensed partners in the UK and US.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an exceptional working student to join our team — someone who wants to build expertise in fintech and banking, sharpen their analytical skills, and work alongside senior specialists on critical operational risk topics.

As a Working Student – Compliance Automation & AI (m/f/d), you’ll sit at the intersection of fintech, data, and operational risk management. You’ll work on high-impact tasks in client onboarding, risk profiling, and transaction surveillance — while leveraging data-driven applications, Python, and AI tools to enhance efficiency and insight.

You’ll collaborate closely with our Compliance, Risk, Product, and Engineering teams, gaining hands-on experience in one of Europe’s fastest-scaling fintechs.

This role is Berlin-based with the ability to work at least 2 days per week from our Berlin HQ.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Onboarding, Risk & Transaction Surveillance

• Verify corporate clients (KYB), identifying legal representatives and beneficial owners through global databases and registries.
• Assess customer risk profiles using structured data, defined frameworks, and regulatory guidelines.
• Review AML alerts from monitoring systems, flag anomalies, and escalate potential cases to senior specialists.
• Analyze transaction patterns to detect suspicious behaviors or potential financial crime indicators.
• Prepare and maintain accurate digital credit files in compliance with internal policies.
• Contribute to the refinement of detection rules to reduce false positives and improve monitoring effectiveness.

Data & Technology Integration

• Work with data-driven applications to support decision-making in compliance and monitoring.
• Use Python for data analysis, workflow automation, and reporting.
• Develop and maintain local LLM-based applications.
• Apply prompt engineering to accelerate research, document drafting, and case analysis.

Process Innovation

• Collaborate with Product and Engineering to improve tools, workflows, and system logic.
• Suggest automation opportunities and AI-driven enhancements.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING

• Enrolled in a university program in computer science, data science, business informatics, engineering, or a related quantitative field, with a strong academic track record.
• Hands-on automation experience (n8n, Make, Zapier, or code-based pipelines), including API integrations.
• Proficiency in Python and SQL.
• Practical experience with LLMs and prompt engineering.
• Structured, detail-oriented, and disciplined about testing and documenting what you build.
• Fluent in English; German or other European languages are a plus.

Nice to have

• Interest in fintech and curiosity about compliance topics such as AML/KYC and sanctions screening. Regulatory knowledge is not required; you'll learn it on the job.
• Experience with data analysis, visualization, or BI tools such as Metabase.
• Experience with Taktile or other rules engines, or with KYB/registry/Google Maps APIs.
• Familiarity with Git and AI coding tools such as Claude Code.

WHAT WE OFFER

• The opportunity to work in a growing team with big responsibilities that thrives on a strong exchange of knowledge and excellence
• Attractive remuneration
• Flat hierarchy and transparent communication in a relaxed, professional atmosphere
• Opportunity to develop your talent in a dynamic team with ambitious goals
• Flexibility and possibility to work remotely
• Monthly mobility benefit
• Wellhub Membership
• Pliant Card with monthly credit to explore the product and enjoy food with colleagues
