Companies use our platform to book ready-to-work staff in real time, while students use our app to find part-time jobs that conveniently fit around their studies. Over 40,000 students and 1,000 partner companies from logistics, retail, and hospitality in all major German cities share our belief that good work is not a coincidence. It is the result of innovative technology and genuine commitment. Good work starts here. The role We're looking for an Engineering Manager to lead our Supply engineering team – the team that owns the talent side of our marketplace. Your team of 5-7 engineers builds the experience our Zenjobbers use to discover, book, and get paid for jobs, and the services that keep the supply side of the marketplace healthy. You'll partner closely with your product counterpart. This is a player-coach role: we're looking for someone who leads through people but stays close enough to the code to guide architecture decisions, unblock the team, and keep the technical bar high. What you'll do✓ Lead, coach, and grow a cross-functional team of full-stack engineers – owning their development, engagement, and performance✓ Own delivery for the Supply domain: shape the roadmap with your product partner, break down complex initiatives, and ensure the team ships predictably and with quality✓ Engage deeply with the product: question assumptions, challenge proposals, and bring ideas of your own – constructively, and always with the business impact in mind✓ Embrace how AI keeps reshaping engineering as a craft: advocate for the increased autonomy these tools bring, and support your team by role-modelling their usage✓ Stay hands-on: guide system design and architecture decisions, review code where it matters, and contribute when it accelerates the team✓ Drive operational excellence – monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement of the team's engineering practices✓ Hire and onboard engineers as the team evolves, and contribute to engineering-wide initiatives beyond your team✓ Collaborate with other Engineering Managers and stakeholders across Product, Operations, and Marketing to align the supply side of the marketplace with company goals What you bring✓ Several years of experience leading software engineers as a people manager, ideally in a product-led B2C or marketplace environment✓ A strong technical foundation: you've worked as a senior engineer yourself and can still credibly engage on architecture, code, and technical trade-offs✓ Comfort with our stack: we build in TypeScript across both backend and frontend, with some older services still in Java and Groovy✓ A product mindset: you care about outcomes over output and know how to connect engineering work to user and business impact✓ Experience growing engineers across levels – coaching, feedback, and performance management hold no secrets for you✓ Pragmatism in balancing delivery speed, quality, and maintainability✓ Fluent English (our company language); German is a plus Engineering at Zenjob Our product engineering teams are cross-functional and full-stack, each owning one of the business domains our marketplace is built around – Supply, Staffing, and Demand. We build in TypeScript across both backend and frontend, with some older services still in Java and Groovy. We run a pragmatic engineering culture: outcomes over output, ownership over process, and direct feedback over comfortable silence. Engineers are expected to engage with the product, not just implement it. And we're leaning into how AI is changing the way software gets built – we invest in the tools and expect everyone, managers included, to use them and push what they make possible.
