About this job

Introduction

About the opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Backend Engineer who is comfortable working with infrastructure to join the Platform Engineering domain in the Connectivity group.

The mission of Platform Engineering is to provide trusted, performant, self-service platforms that empower product teams to build 'the bank the world loves to use.' The Edge team contributes to this mission by providing a unified Edge platform for all partner-facing and customer-facing traffic, where security and governance are embedded by default, operational ownership is always clear, and platform changes can be made quickly without creating customer risk.

As one of the first banks completely hosted in the cloud, our security, resilience, and productivity standards require not only the use of a modern technology stack but also building teams in line with our principles, supporting our product teams, the company, and our customers.

Who we are

N26 has reimagined banking for today’s digital world. Technology and design empower everything we do and it’s how we are building the global banking platform the world loves to use.

We've eliminated physical branches, paperwork, and hidden fees for an elegant digital experience and supreme savings. Giving people the power to live and bank their way is what gets us out of bed in the morning and inspires the work that we do.

We are headquartered in Berlin with offices in multiple cities across Europe, including Vienna and Barcelona, and a 1,500-strong team of more than 80 nationalities.

In this role, you will:

Design, build, and maintain build a secure and performant unified Edge platform for all partner-facing and customer-facing traffic.
Bring a strong engineering perspective to the team, helping to instill software design best practices, scalable system architecture, and high-quality code standards.

Collaborate with Engineers, SREs, and other platform stakeholders to deliver robust, maintainable, and secure infrastructure solutions tailored to the needs of both technical and non-technical internal users.

Actively support platform scalability, observability, and testing efforts, helping to ensure services are production-ready and compliant.

Take part in roadmap and architecture discussions, contributing your experience in backend systems and your understanding of customer-facing product constraints.

Foster cross-functional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mentoring within the team.

What you need to be successful

Background and skills:

At least 5 years of proven experience as a backend-focused software engineer, designing and building production-grade services and systems.

Strong programming skills preferably with JVM-based languages like Java or Kotlin, along with familiarity with relevant backend frameworks and tooling such as Spring.
Solid understanding of software architecture patterns (e.g., microservices, event-driven architectures, REST/gRPC APIs).
Practical experience with cloud-native development, with strong expertise in AWS.
Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and familiarity with DevOps/SRE principles.
Appreciation for the importance of code quality, automated testing, documentation, and observability.

Knowledge of Golang and Python.
Experience with deploying and maintaining Kubernetes workloads.
Familiarity with AI-related AWS services, particularly SageMaker, Bedrock, or similar tooling, is highly desirable.
Prior experience with AI/ML platforms is a strong plus - or a demonstrated eagerness to learn and grow in this direction.

You think like an engineer, act like a product owner, and communicate like a teammate.
Comfortable navigating ambiguity and able to make pragmatic technical decisions.
Strong collaborator who thrives in cross-functional environments and adds value across the software development lifecycle.
Enthusiastic about sharing knowledge and learning from others.

We’re looking for a seasoned backend engineer eager to apply their expertise in the context of Edge networking. Someone who will both bring a mature software engineering mindset to the team and contribute hands-on to the delivery of platform components that enable edge networking capabilities across the company. This role is ideal for someone with a strong foundation in building production systems who is excited to expand their impact in the direction of AI-enabling, modern cloud infrastructure. You’ll join a team of passionate, cross-functional engineers working to shape scalable, reusable systems that democratize access to AI technologies, and grow alongside them in the process. If you're excited about combining engineering maturity with ambition, and if you enjoy shaping high-impact solutions alongside a team of talented, curious minds:

we’d love to meet you!
