Backend Engineer (f/m/x)

About lemon.markets 🍋

We enable anyone to be an investor. Our mission is to grow investing opportunities for all European customers and businesses. By empowering FinTechs, banks, and wealth managers to offer investment products, we help create financial well-being for their customers.

lemon.markets is a Brokerage-as-a-Service platform: simple digital access to capital markets through a single API. Our API-first infrastructure abstracts brokerage complexity with a well-documented API, a self-service customer operations portal, and a clear regulatory framework, so partners can launch customer-centric, compliant products in weeks, not months.

As part of the dwpbank group, we’re adding a layer of resources and expertise to benefit from, while continuing to operate as an independent fintech with our own team, product, and start-up identity under the dwpbank umbrella.

Your Mission:

As a Backend Engineer at lemon.markets, you will play an important role in designing the backend services and architecture of our brokerage API platform that allows other companies to easily embed investing into their product.

You will independently build and deliver high-quality features and services within a cross-functional team, from implementation through production. You will take ownership of your team’s deliverables, make thoughtful implementation choices based on product context and customer needs, and help ensure that the systems you work on are reliable, maintainable and ready to scale.

You will work in one of our product domains: Customer Lifecycle, Investing or Banking processes, helping us maintain and improve the Core Platform & Systems around them.

Our tech stack is Python, FastAPI, AWS and Postgres.

In this role, you will make a meaningful contribution to the development of our core Platform & Systems and to the technical decisions within your team. You will work alongside a cross-functional team of experts as we build the investment infrastructure for the next 100 million retail investors in Europe.

About you:

• You write well-structured, maintainable and well-tested code in at least one modern programming language, such as Python , Go, Java, Ruby, JavaScript or TypeScript. We’re technology agnostic, so Python experience isn’t required, but you should be excited to learn it.
• You have experience in designing and implementing highly scalable architecture and reliable REST APIs and bring the desire to make them world-class.
• You’ve gained good experience with software in a cloud environment ( AWS , GCP, Azure) and the architectural patterns for this environment.
• You have a good understanding of any of these document-based or relational database technology such as MySQL/ PostgreSQL .
• You know how to write high-quality code that is understandable, maintainable and well tested, and can guide other engineers to do the same via code reviews.
• you're embracing AI tooling and are actively incorporating it into your daily workflow
• You have good problem-solving skills and the ability to provide in-depth evaluations and analyses of unique and complex technological issues.
• You have a track record of designing, building and operating reliable and scalable backend systems as part of a cross-functional team.

You will be successful in this role if:

• Growing investment opportunities excites you. We operate in a highly regulated environment and therefore having worked prior in a Fintech or financial Service provider would give you a head start, but is not a must.
• You see yourself as a product engineer.  That means, you are excited by solving customer problems and strive to become an expert in the domain area you are working in.
• You enjoy building from scratch. This means high involvement in the product development process itself while advocating for the best engineering practices. It also means that you enjoy taking technical decisions.
• You are ready and willing to take ownership of problems and act on them decisively with no supervision. You always thrive for high quality outcomes through focus, determination and attention to detail.
• You are a team player. Working together as a team, sharing knowledge & providing mentorship comes naturally to you. Long term - you consider becoming a team lead.
• You have no problem with learning new technologies on the go. You try to solve problems with more things than the ones you already know. We will always enable you with that, but your willingness has to come first.
• You understand what working in a startup or a similar lean organisation is like. You are able to work with a small team in a lean environment, can move quickly and focus on what's truly important.
• You see yourself reflected in the skills above, or you see yourself growing into this path.

We're looking for people with passion, desire to learn and that are team players. You're encouraged to apply, even if your experience doesn't precisely match the job description. Your skills and passion will stand out - and set you apart - especially if your career has taken some extraordinary twists and turns.
